Day in Medical History 11-21-1885

Helen Fairchild (1885 – 1918): Helen Fairchild was born on November 21, 1885, and graduated as a nurse in 1913. She served on the Western Front during WWI. Helen was diagnosed with a large gastric ulcer in November of 1917, but continued to work. Her doctors suggested the ulcer had probably been made worse due to exposure to mustard gases used against the Allies . She underwent surgery, however died on the third day after surgery.
The letters she sent to her American family about combat nursing during WWI made her famous.  She died on January 13, 1918 and was burried at Somme American Cemetery and Memorial in Bony, France.
